37 watercolour drawings, made for the most part in 1792-3 on Lord Macartney's embassy to China (see also Add MS 33931), the rest on a mission with Sir John Barrow in southern Africa in 1801-2. Many of them have been engraved, either for Sir John Barrow's Voyage to Cochinchina (1806, containing the African mission as appendix) or for his Travels in China (1804).
Inscription on f. 2: 'Original Drawings by [William] Alexander and by Samuel Daniel[l], artists of celebrity in their day.'
Only the drawings on folios 22 and 23 have been signed by the artist, William Alexander. Other attributions in the list below have been taken from the published engravings. Titles or inscriptions in single quotation marks have been transcribed from the source. Modern place names have been added [in square brackets], but these do not always correspond exactly to the same territory as the historical place name.

The term ‘Hottentot’ (ff. 31-33) was a historical colonial term or exonym used by Europeans to describe the Khoekhoe people in southern Africa. ‘Quakkak’ (f. 30) is probably a version of Khoekhoe. Barrow uses the name ‘Quaiquae’ in An Account of travels into the interior of Southern Africa in the years 1797 and 1798 (London, 1801), I, p. 151.
