The collection includes manuscripts of Sir John Barrow's (1764-1848) autobiography and other writings; drawings by William Alexander and Samuel Daniell of Lord Macartney's embassy to China (1792-93) and Sir John Barrow's mission to southern Africa (1802-03); and letters, drawings, maps and printed materials relating to Arctic expeditions in search of Sir John Franklin.
The bequest also included six volumes now in the Department of Printed Books, viz. (1) An Atlas of plates and maps illustrating the Earl of Macartney's embassy to China, 1796;-(2) Ten coloured views, by Lieut. W. H. Browne, on the Arctic expedition of H.M. Ships Enterprize and Investigator, 1850;-(3) Play-bills, etc., printed on board the ships Of the Arctic squadrons, 1851-4;-(4) Facsimile of the 'Illustrated Arctic News,' published on board H.M.S. Resolute in search of Sir John Franklin, edited by Lieut. Sherard Osborn and Geo. F. McDougall, 1852; -(5) "L'Illustration " for 23 Apr. 1853, containing an article on the Franklin search expedition of 1851-2 ;-(6) Sketches made during the voyage up Wellington Channel in search of Sir J. Franklin, with a short account of each drawing by Commander Walter W. May, R.N., 1855.
