- Title:
- BARROW BEQUEST. Vol. II. Autograph manuscript of Sir John Barrow’s Voyages of Discovery and Research within the Arctic regions
- Scope & Content:
-
The autograph manuscript of Sir John Barrow's Voyages of Discovery and Research within the Arctic regions (1846). Note by Barrow’s son, Col. John Barrow, 1851 (f. 5): ‘Written at the age of 82, and (which is worthy of remark) without the aid of spectacles’. Another note by Col. Barrow (f. 2) states that this and the two following volumes were saved by his mother, ‘my father invariably tearing everything up when it had passed through the press, and even this MS. is incomplete from that very cause.’
Includes a photograph of a portrait of an Arctic explorer (f. 4), a letter from Admiral Sir William Edward Parry to Sir J. Barrow, 25 Nov. 1845 (ff. 142-143, printed edition, 1846, pp. 313-14), and a note by him relating to his attempt to reach the North Pole (ff. 147-149, printed edition, pp. 320-323).
