Scope & Content:

The letters are divided into the following sections:

1. ‘Captain Sherard Osborn, C.B.’ Inscribed in pencil: ‘Private Letters’. The first six letters (ff. 4-39) form a sort of journal of the expedition under Sir E. Belcher (see Add MS 35307, art. 1); the remainder are dated 21 January 1859-19 April 1861, and include (ff. 46-48) photographs of Lord Elgin and his staff (including Laurence Oliphant, the author), and of H.M.S. Furious, Osborn's ship, which carried Lord Elgin's embassy to China in 1858-9. ff. 2-86.
