(1) Letters to Richard Moore the Chartist from political associates; 1839-1873. Included (ff. 1-6, 8-14) are some letters, etc., 1839-1841, n.d., from Francis Place (d. 1854), apparently all to Moore except one (f. 3) to Henry Hetherington the publisher, 30 June 1840: copies (with variations) of the letter to Hetherington and of the two letters to Moore dated 10 (and 14) April 1841 and 20 April 1841 (ff. 8, 10) are in the Place Papers, viz. Add. MS. 35151, ff. 203, 322, 336. Other writers include (f. 17) Richard Cobden, M.P., and (f. 20) John Bright, P.C., M.P. The letters to Moore are followed (ff. 25-33) by letters, from various correspondents, to his uncle-in-law James Watson, the publisher; 1838-1848. These letters were apparently acquired by Burns in November 1909 from Alfred Moore (cf. 46331, f. 189b). ff. 1-33.
(2) Letters to Joseph Lane of the Labour Emancipation League and (1884) of the Socialist League, mainly from political sympathisers; 1881-1905, n.d. Several letters (ff. 76, 91-97b, 99-103b, 106) are from William Morris, as Honorary Treasurer of the Socialist League, 1887-1889, and his daughter May, 1887 (ff. 82, 84). Included also (f. 107) is a letter, 21 Feb. 1890, to Frank Kitz, Secretary of the Socialist League, from John Bruce Glasier. ff. 34b-119.
