HARINGTON PAPERS. Vol. VIII (ff. iv + 44). 'The booke of Haryngton's Lands for Sir Henry Hubbert his Majesties attorney general'; circ. 1606-1612. Copies of documents relating to lands formerly belonging to Sir James Harington of Brierley from their forfeiture in 1485 to the grant of their reversion to John Harington of Stepney in 1570. The manuscript was compiled by Sir John Harington of Kelston and includes additions (ff. 26b, 35b, 36) and marginal notes in his autograph: it was apparently destined for Sir Henry Hobart (Attorney-General 1606-1613). The contents are as follows:-
(1) Bill of Attainder against John Howard, 1st Duke of Norfolk, Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Surrey, and Sir James Harington of Brierley; 7 Nov. 1485. ff. 1-5 b.
(2) Letters patent granting to Edward Stanley, 1st Baron Monteagle, the manors of Farleton, co. Lanc., Farleton, co. Westm., Brierley, co. York, and half the manor of Hemsworth, co. York, previously belonging to Sir James Harington; 8 Mar. 1489 (see Calendar of Patent Rolls 1485-1494). ff. 6-6b.
(3) Letters patent granting to James Harington, Clerk of the Bakehouse, the reversion of Sir James Harington's land on the failure of Lord Monteagle's heirs male; Jan. 1522 (Letters and Papers, Foreign and Domestic, Henry VIII, iii, pt. ii, no. 2016). ff. 7-8.
(4) Letters patent granting to Thomas Stanley, 1st Earl of Derby, lands including land formerly belonging to Sir James Harington in co. Lanc.; 25 Feb. 1489 (see Calendar of Patent Rolls, 1485-1494). ff. 8b-10b.
(5) Letters patent granting to Stephen Harington, have surrendered all Harington, his father's reversion; 28 July 1564 (Calendar of Patent Rolls 1563-1566, 307). ff. 11-13b.
(6) Declaration by Sir William Cordell, Master of the Rolls, that Stephen, Henry and Thomas Harington, sons of James Harington, have surrendered all their letters patent; circ. 1564 -1570. f. 14.
(7) Pedigree, etc,. in the hand of Sir John Harington of Kelston, of the Harington family from Sir Nicolas Harington (d. 1403), to Stephen Harington (d. aft. 1568). f. 15.
(8) Letters patent granting John Harington of Stepney the reversion previously granted to Stephen Harington; 25 Aug. 1570 (Calendar of Patent Rolls 1569-1572, 1315). ff. 16-20.
