ff. 1-2v. Sketch (ff. 2-2v) of the end of 'Bizarrerie', op. 13, no. 2, for violin and piano. Composed in 1889. Published by Orsborn and Tuckwood, 1890, and Ascherberg, 1890.
ff. 3-12v. Sketches of the Introduction (ff. 4v-5), no. 3 (ff. 6-6v), the Intermezzo between nos. 4 and 5 (f. 7), parts of nos. 5-7 (ff. 8-10v) and no. 8 (ff. 11v-12v) of the eleven voluntaries for organ, op. 14, published as The Vesper Voluntaries . . ., Book 26, by Orsborn and Tuckwood, 1891, and Ascherberg, 1891. Composed in 1889. On f. 10 (reversed) is an unidentified fragment for violin (?) and piano, and on f. 11 (reversed) the opening of a Menuetto from an unidentified Sonatina.
ff. 13-14v. Sketch (f. 14v) of the opening of 'La Capricieuse', op. 17, with dedication (f. 14), 'A son ami Fred Ward Le Staccato. Morceau caractéristique pour le Violon avec accptte de piano par Edouard Elgar Op. 17'. Composed in 1891. Published by Breitkopf and Härtel, 1893.
ff. 15-18v. 'O Happy Eyes', op. 18, no. 1. Rough sketch (ff. 17v-18v) dated 'Nov: 20; 1893', with a copy of the words in the hand of Lady Elgar (f. 16), dated '11 Feb. 1888'. Published as an unaccompanied part-song by Novello, in The Musical Times, March 1896. Elgar's note 'Braut's' (f. 18) indicates that the words are by his wife, Caroline Alice Elgar. Mock device of three golf balls (f. 17) inscribed'1893', 'R', 'B', 'T' [R. B. Townshend].
ff. 19-20v. Sketch (ff. 20-20v) of the overture 'Froissart', op. 19. Composed 6 Apr.-July 1890. String parts published by Novello, 1890.
ff. 21-23. 'Serenade for Strings', op. 20. Composed in 1892. Published by Breitkopf and Härtel, 1893. Rough sketch in short score (ff. 22-22v), including some material subsequently discarded, and clean open score (f. 23) of the beginning of the second movement.
ff. 24-34. 'Spanish Serenade', op. 23, part-song with orchestral accompaniment. Composed in 1891 and scored in June 1892. Published by Novello, 1892. Sketch in short score imperfect at the end (ff. 25-33v), with a rough sketch of the opening, etc. (f. 34). On f. 34v is an unidentified vocal fragment.
ff. 36-82v. 'The Black Knight', op. 25, ballad for chorus and orchestra, to words translated by H. W. Longfellow from J. L. Uhland. Completed in 1892. Published by Novello, 1893. Draft of Scenes 1-3 (ff. 39-55v), summary sketches for the whole work (ff. 58-61v) signed at the end, 'C. Alice & Edward Elgar Aug. 29: 1889', and a number of separate sketches for Scenes 1 (ff. 62-65v, 66v-67, 68-69, 82v), 2 (ff. 71-71v), 3 (ff. 66, 67v, 70v) and 4 (ff. 69v, 71v, 73-82).
ff. 84-93v. Sketches of two part-songs with accompaniment for violins and piano, 'The Snow' and 'Fly Singing Bird', op. 26, nos. 1 and 2, to words by C. Alice Elgar. Composed in 1894. Published by Novello, 1895.
ff. 94-143. 'From the Bavarian Highlands', op. 27. Described (f. 96) as 'Five Choral Songs with orchestral accompaniment. The words imitated [by C. Alice Elgar] from Schnadhüpfier & Volkslieder. The music composed by Edward Elgar .. .' Composed in 1895 and orchestrated in 1896. Published by J. Williams, 1896. As follows:- (a) No. 1, 'The Dance'. ff. 96v-102, 11 Ob;- (b) No. 2, 'False Love' called 'Bairisch V' and dated 'Sunday Feb. 24.95'. ff. 142-143;- (c) No. 3, 'Lullaby' called 'Bavaria III'. ff. 111- 114v;-- d) No. 4, 'Aspiration', two drafts, the first (copied by Lady Elgar) marked 'IV' (altered from 'II') 'Aspi:ration', the second 'II Volkslied'. Further fragment on f.100v. ff. 103-108, 109-110;-(e) No. 5, 'On the Alm' called 'Bavaria No. 5' and dated at the end 'Mar: 16:95'. ff. 115-118;- (f) No. 6, 'The Marksman', without title. Two sets of sketches with a copy of the words of this number and of no. 3 partly in Lady Elgar's hand (f. 124). ff. 119-141. The sketches are now bound in the order in which Elgar had kept them roughly sewn together, except that ff. 103-108, formerly loose, have been placed before other sketches for no. 4.
ff. 144-225. 'Lux Christi', i.e. 'The Light of Life', op. 29, oratorio for soli, chorus and orchestra, to words by the Rev. E. Capel Cure. Composed in 1896. Published by Novello, 1896. Fairly complete drafts and sketches.
