'The Apostles', op. 49, oratorio for soli, chorus and orchestra. Completed in August 1903. Published by Novello, 1903. As follows:-
ff. 1-97. Clean sketches of most of the work, mainly in condensed score, with Elgar's directions to the engraver passim. Draft note in German, f. 23v, to a friend referring to 'dein Wagner'sche Hymnus in Berlin'. Plan for Scene 2, 'By the wayside' on f. 33v. Setting of part of the libretto subsequently cut, 'There came one running, and kneeled to Him . . .', on ff. 37-38.
ff. 98-233. Rough sketches. Fragments of early sketches, dated (f. 118) 'Nov: 1896', at ff. 118-125v. F. 146 is annotated 'Material' 'end of Pt 1' and also bears a series of initials of Elgar's friends, e.g. 'A.E.R.' [Alfred E. Rodewald]. Note to the engraver, f. 166. Notes of themes by Elgar, including 'Peter's theme', 'Fellowship', 'Angel', on ff. 169, 198, etc.
