Sketches and drafts of the music and libretto of Elgar's uncompleted third oratorio, intended to form the third part of a trilogy with 'The Apostles', op. 49, and 'The Kingdom', op. 51; circ. 1906, etc. (see Kennedy, op. cit., pp. 168-169). As follows:-
ff. 1-8. Fragmentary musical sketches.
ff. 9-106. Plans (ff. 9-10), notes and drafts for Elgar's libretto. Part of the libretto derives from material discarded from 'The Kingdom' (cf. the Simon of Gitta episode at ff. 18-22 of this volume and Add MS 47905 B, ff. 193-196).
ff. 107-119. Printed libretti of other oratorios, including St. Peter, set by Sir Julius Benedict, and St. Barnabas, set by Philip Armes, with Elgar's notes, newspaper cuttings relating to sermons.
ff. 122-127. Draft (f. 122), in Lady Elgar's hand, of a letter from Elgar to Wiliam Edward Torr, Vicar of Eastham, Oct. 1905, describing the plan of his trilogy, with Torr's reply, 26 Oct. 1905 (f. 124), and an undated letter to Elgar from Edward Capel Cure, Rector of Stower-Provost (ff. 125-126), with Old Testament references.
