As follows:- (a) Sketches, mostly marked 'K' indicating copied sketches. Stamped '13 Jun 1912', f. 29. ff. 3-50;- (b) Rough sketches. Scribblings on ff. 71v, 72v include French vocabulary, and notes on Italian coats of arms. Sketch for the song, 'The Kingsway', on f. 74. ff. 51-80;-(c) Copies of O'Shaughnessy's poem, mostly typewritten. ff. 81-83;- (d) Copy, in the hand of Lady Elgar, of a letter from Elgar to Ernest Newman, 14 Aug. 1912 (ff. 85--86), with Elgar's notes (ff. 87-101) on 'The Music Makers'. ff. 84-101;- (e) Copy, in the hand of Lady Elgar, of the article on O'Shaughnessy in the Encyclopaedia Britannica, 10th ed., 1902. ff. 102-104.
ff. 105-130. 'Give unto the Lord', op. 74, for four-part chorus, organ and orchestra. Composed in 1914. Published by Novello, 1914. Two groups of sketches paginated by Elgar 1-4 (ff. 106-109) and 4-11, 14-18 (ff. 110- 122), miscellaneous sketches (ff. 123-129) and typewritten copy of the words (f. 130).
ff. 131-167. 'The Spirit of England', op. 80, nos. 1-3, setting of three poems by L. Binyon for soprano and contralto or tenor soli, chorus and orchestra. Composed in 1915 (nos. 2 and 3) and 1917 (no. 1). Published by Novello, 1917. As follows:-(a) 'The Fourth of August, op. 80, no. 1. Rough sketches, paginated 1-8 by Elgar. Several folios are marked 'Binyon I' but this group also contains sketches marked 'Binyon II' and 'Binyon III' and the order differs from the final version. ff. 132-139;-(b) 'To Women', op. 80, no. 2. Rough sketches. ff. 141-148;-(c) 'For the Fallen', op. 80, no. 3. Rough sketches. ff. 149-163;-(d) Incomplete proofs of the octavo edition of no. 1 (ff. 164-166) and proof title-page of 'With Proud Thanksgiving' adapted from 'For the Fallen' for performance at the dedication of the Cenotaph. ff. 164-167.
