LEAKE PAPERS. Vol. XXXI (ff. ii+80). Papers relating to the mission of Commodore the Hon. Charles Stewart al. Steward (Vice- Admiral 1734), as Plenipotentiary to Morocco, which resulted in the release of English captives; 1720-1721. Cat. no. 108. Label no. 13. Viz.:-
(1) Journal of the mission kept by his nephew, Midshipman [William?] Stewart al. Steward, 22 July 1720-8 Aug. 1721, followed (ff. 44b-48b) by an account of the country and its ruler. Copy, with some alterations, circ. 1725 (see f. 2), by S. M. Leake II, who has added a preface (f. 2) and an introduction (ff. 3-4b). For another account of the mission see J. Windus, A Journey to Mequinez, 1725. ff. 5-48b.
(2) Letters (six) from Henry Boyd, Master of the 'Pink', to his brother, giving an account of his captivity in Morocco and rescue by the mission; 1720-1721. Contemporary copies. See also A Description of the Nature of Slavery among the Moors ... to which is added an account of Capt. Stuart's negociations for the redemption of the English captives ... with an exact List of the Persons that were redeem'd, 1721. According to Leake's preface (f. 2b) the letters were the property of Midshipman Stewart. ff. 49-80b.
