BANKS COLLECTION. Vol. XIV (ff. 96). Historical Sagas relating to Norway and Iceland, together with romantic sagas translated from foreign romances; 18th cent. 'No. 43'according to a note on f. 1. Viz.:-
(1) 'Saga af Magnuse Kónge Góða'. History of King Magnús the Good of Norway (d. 1047) from his birth till the return of Haraldr Harðráði to Norway from Constantinople and Russia in 1046. Printed in C. C. Rafn, Fornmanna Sögur, vi, Copenhagen, 1831, pp. 1-124. The present copy agrees substantially with the printed edition, which is divided into 52 chapters. The spaces left for numbering the chapters remain blank. ff. 1-44.
(2) 'Broddhelga Saga': in 19 chapters with a gap in chapter 13, as in other copies. For a description of this saga see Add. MS. 4867, art. 5. ff. 45-61 b.
(3) 'Saga af Melusine og Remund': in 7 chapters. An abridgement of the Danish version of the French Romance, La Melusine, of Jean d'Arras. For the Danish version see K. L. Rahbek, Dansk og Norsk Nationalvaerk, iii, Copenhagen, 1830, pp. 495-520. ff. 62-68.
(4) 'Saga af Clarus Keisara Syne: in 19 chapters. Story of Clarus, son of the Emperor of Saxland, telling how he wins the French King's proud daughter, Serena. A fuller text has been edited by Gustaf Cederschiöld in Festskrift till kgl. Universitetet i Köpenhamn vid dess fyrahundra års Jubileum i Juni 1879 från kgl.CarolinskaUniversitetet i Lund. ff.69-83.
(5) 'Saga af Amaliu Drottningu': in 17 chapters. Story of Queen Amalia of France, telling how her husband, King Michias, sees her carried off by a dragon and, assuming that she is dead, marries Lapecana, a Spanish princess. Amalia has meanwhile escaped from the dragon, and the story then tells how she returns, how a council held to settle the claims of the rival queens decides in favour of the second who has borne a son, and how Amalia marries Lapecana's brother, Lapus, son of the King of Spain. ff. 83b-96b.
