Scope & Content:: Collections, mostly in Icelandic and relating to Iceland, presented by Sir Joseph Banks, 1767-1781. Banks visited Iceland in 1772 and brought back a collection of printed books and MSS. which he presented to the British Museum on 3 December 1772. The MSS. may be identified from a 'Catalogue of Books brought from Iceland ...' (Department of Printed Books, press-mark 980. h. 32) as the present 4865, 4866, 4875- 4877, 4879-4882, 4885-4888, 4890, 4891, 4893-4896. Further MSS. were sent to Banks from Iceland at various times between 1773 and 1779 (see H. Hermannsson, 'Sir Joseph Banks and Iceland', Islandica, vol. xviii, 1928, pp. 16-17). These were presented by him to the Museum on 9 January 1778 and 16 March 1781 and are now 4857-4864, 4867-4874, 4878, 4883, 4884, 4889, 4892. Four non-Icelandic MSS. from Banks's library were presented by him on 28 August 1767 (4900), 11 February 1780 (4898, 4899), and 16 March 1781 (4897). The original numbers allocated (which correspond up to 30 with the numbers given in the 'Catalogue of Books brought from Iceland') are written in the MSS. (with the exception of 4879) and are noted in the descriptions below. Forty-four volumes. Paper, unless the contrary is stated. Various sizes.
