BANKS COLLECTION. Vol. XIX (ff. 88). Seven romantic Sagas, together with another incomplete saga and extracts from newspapers; 18th cent. 'Nos. 3-9' according to a note on f. 1. Viz.:-
(1) 'Valldemars Saga': in 12 chapters. Story of Valdemar, son of King Philip of Saxland. Cf. Add. MS. 4859, art. 3. Copied 20 June 1763. Followed by verses. ff. 1 - 10.
(2) 'Sagan af Sigúrdi og Asmúnde Húna Konunge': in 9 chapters. Story of Sigurðr Fótr (named 'Foot' because of his agility), King of Valland, and Asmundr, King of Húnaland, telling of their rivalry for the love of Signý of Denmark and of their brotherhood in arms. Said to have been written on a stone wall in Cologne. Copied 24 August 1763. Followed by verses. ff. 10b-15b.
(3) 'Sagann af Hromúnde Greipssine': in 7 chapters. For a description of this saga see Add. MS. 4859, art. 1. Copied 23 August 1763. Followed by verses. ff. 16-2 lb.
(4) 'Sagan af Bragda Ölver': in 5 chapters. Cf. Add. MS. 4859, art. 2. Copied 14 September 1763. Not a direct copy of Add MS 4859. ff. 22-25b.
(5) 'Aefintyr af Eynum Riddara er kallast Walltari'. Story of Duke Walter, who marries Gressiles, the daughter of the cowherd, Janiculus. This is a version of 'Patient Griselda', the last tale of the Decameron. ff. 25b-29.
(6) 'Saga af Stúrlaúge Starfsame': in 17 chapters. Story of Sturlaugr Starfsami, son of Ingólfr, chief of Naumudalr, telling how he goes through many labours for the love of Asa the Fair, his last labour being the recovery of the horn of an aurochs, which has been lost by Haraldr Gullmuðr, King of Trondheim. Copied 27 October 1763. Followed by verses. Another copy is in Add. MS. 11161, f. 111. Printed at Upsala in
1694, with a Swedish version by Gudmund Olofsson, and by C. C. Rafn, Fornaldar Sögur, iii, Copenhagen, 1830, pp. 592-647. The return of Sturlaugr with the horn, related in chapter 19 of the printed versions, is here told in chapter 13, and chapters 14-17 give a brief account of his final adventures. The present copy appears to agree with the text of A. M. MS. folio, 171, described by P. E. Müller in Sagabibliothek, ii, Copenhagen, 1818, pp. 645-646. ff. 29b-43.
(7) Part of nos. 61-65 of Die Dänische Fama, and of nos. 60-64 of the Kiöbenhavns Post-Rytter, 28 Jul.-15 Aug. 1738. ff. 44-53b, 80-88b.
(8) 'Aefentyred af Rudent Dramblata'. First three chapters of the tale of Rudent the Proud, son of the King of Wallachia, telling how he is cursed with pride by a Troll-woman. Imperfect. The heading is written among some scribblings on f. 54. ff. 54b-55b.
(9) 'Saga af Þorsteine VykingsSyne': in 25 chapters. Story of Vikingr and his son, Thorsteinn, telling of the wonders of the sword Angrvaðill and the magic ship Elliði, and then relating how Thorsteinn settles in the Norwegian district of Sogn, where he has a son, the famous Frithiof the Bold. Printed at Upsala in 1680, with a Swedish version and long Latin notes by J. 1. Reenhelm. Also printed in Fornaldar Sögur, ii, pp. 381-459. ff. 56-79b.
