BANKS COLLECTION. Vol. XXVI (ff. 326). Jónsbók, together with Icelandic versions of certain Danish ordinances, a collection of decisions delivered at the Althing, etc.; 17th-18th cent. 'No. 18' according to a note on f. 1. Viz.:-
(1) 'Kirkiu Ordan'. An Icelandic version of the first and second parts of the ecclesiastical ordinance issued in Latin by Christian III of
Denmark on 2 September 1537 (and re-issued, with alterations and additions, by Christian IV on 2 July 1607), containing rules for preaching and church-services, and articles relating to the privileges and emoluments of priests, their marriages, the poor-laws, books of instruction, monks and nuns, rules for the services of the canonical hours in monasteries, etc. An Icelandic version of this ordinance, as it was issued in 1607, was made by Bishop Oddr Einarsson (Bishop of Skálholt 1589- 1630) and printed at Hólar in 1635; see Lovsamling for Island, ed. Oddgeir Stephensen and Jón Sigurðsson, i, Copenhagen, 1853, p. 150. ff. 2-30b.
(2) 'Hiónabandsins Articuli'. An Icelandic version of the ordinance on marriage and divorce, issued by Frederick II of Denmark on 2 June 1587. For the Danish text see Lovsamlingfor Island, i, p. 114, where it is stated that Bishop Oddr Einarsson translated these articles. ff. 31-38b.
(3) The twenty-six articles of Ribe (in Jutland) on church-services and on marriage, issued on 4 May 1542 (here mistakenly dated 1552). For the Danish text see Lovsamling for Island, i, p. 55. ff. 39-45b.
(4) A decision (delivered at Hvoll) relating to vagrants who commit petty larceny and theft, dated 10 May 1604, followed by the substance of a decision (delivered at Öxarfjördr) relating to dowries and the support of minors, dated 1 July 1596. ff. 45b-46b.
(5) 'Jónsbók' with 'Registur', breaking off at 'Landzleigu Balckur. Cap. XII'. Cf. Add. MS. 4873. ff. 47-176.
(6) Miscellaneous rules and decisions relating mainly to the 'Jónsbók', including an index of subjects in the different sections, and a special register of the subjects in the section relating to inheritance. ff. 176- 204b.
(7) Acts passed at various convocations of the clergy in the years 1573, 1574, 1576 and 1597. ff. 205-209.
(8) The recess, ordinance and custom ordained by King Christian III of Denmark in 1547 (mistakenly dated 1544 in the heading) relating to the administration of the laws, etc., followed by a note relating to the Jónsbók. (9) 'Christians Rettar Bot hin Lánga utgefen Anno 1450'. The 'Long Ordinance' of Christian I of Denmark relating to the administration of the laws in Iceland, followed by a collection of decisions given at the Althing and various provincial Things, concerning tithes, taxes, marriage-laws and poor-laws, together with other royal and official writs, memoranda, etc. The 'Long Ordinance' was printed in Forordninger og aabne Breve som til Island ere udgivne af de höist-priselige Konger af den Oldenborgiske Stamme, i, Hrappsey, 1776, pp. 10-22.
