BANKS COLLECTION. Vol. XXXV (ff. 109). A Collection of Psalms and other devotional works in verse; 18th cent. 'No. 21' according to a note on f. 1. The name Gisli Þorkelsson appears on f. 108b. Viz.:-

(1) 'Taara Pressa'. A series of 29 psalms, most of them penitential, translated by Steinn Jónsson, Bishop of Hólar (d. 1739), from the Danish of Jesper Rasmussen Rachlöv, a chaplain in the Danish fleet, whose volume entitled Taare-perse first appeared in 1684. Printed at Hólar in 1719, with a preface on the tears of Christ and an introductory psalm from the German which do not appear in this copy. ff. 3-29.

(2) 'Historia Pynunnar og Daudans Drottins vors Jesu Christi', in 7 psalms, by Guðmundr Erlendsson, Priest of Fell (d. 1670). ff. 31-41.

(3) Miscellaneous psalms by Stefán Olafsson, Jón Th(orðar)son(?), Gisli Jónsson and anonymous. ff. 41b-56.

(4) Religious songs composed by various talented men, including Arni Thorvardsson, Bjarni Jónsson, Sigurðr Gislason, Jón E(inars)son(?), H(allgrimr) P(étrsson), Guðmundr Erlendsson and anonymous. ff. 57-83.

(5) Psalm in memory of Steinunn Jónsdóttir, by Stefán Hallkelsson, ex-priest of Grindavik; 171 1. ff. 85-88b.

(8) 'Harma Boge'. A psalm in memory of Margret Halldórsdóttir, followed by another psalm in memory of the same and of those who died with her in the smallpox epidemic of 1707. ff. 89-92.

(7) Two psalms in memory of Þorðr Oddsson, Priest of Völlr in south Iceland, and his wife Valgerdr Jónsdóttir, who died on the day of her husband's funeral in 1704. Written by Benedikt Magnússon Bech, Provincial Judge at Skagafjörðr in north Iceland (d. 1719) and Gisli Magnússon, his brother (d. circa 1707), 20 Apr. 1705. ff. 92b-95b.

(8) Four elegiac pieces, the first on Jon Ellingsson (Erlingson), Priest at Olafsvöllr in south Iceland (d. 1707), the second on Arni Oddsson,

Judge for south and east Iceland (d. 1665), the third on Steinunn Olafsdóttir and the fourth on Högni Sigurdsson of Gufunes. The second of the above elegies is by Hallgrímr Pétursson and is printed in his Andleger Psalmar og Kvaede, Copenhagen, 1770, pp. 222-227. ff. 95b-105b.
