BANKS COLLECTION. Vol. XLI (ff. 271). Medical treatises, receipts, etc., mostly by writers of the 14th century, transcribed by several hands, probably in the Netherlands, mainly in 1494-1496. Latin
and Low German. The principal items are:-
(1) A short treatise in four parts on the plague by Johannes Jacobi, chancellor of the University of Montpellier (d. bef. 1364). Begins 'Ad honorem sancte et individue Trinitatis ... Ego Johannes Jacobi ... volo aliqua de pestilentia scribere'. ff. 2-8b.
(2) An account, apparently autobiographical, by Guido de Cauluaco (i.e. Guy de Chauliac, maître en médecine of the University of Montpellier) of his labours in the plagues of 1348 and 1360; followed by remedies suggested against the plague: possibly the 'Libellus de Peste' referred to in E. Nicaise's La Grande Chirurgie de Guy de Chauliac ... composée en l'an 1363, Paris, 1890, in which the author and his works are treated exhaustively, with numerous references to most of the other writers whose works are contained in the present MS. ff. 9-12b.
(4) Descriptions of various maladies and their cures, imperfect at the beginning. At the end is written 'Explicit super 3m Auic[ennae?]'. ff. 21-24b.
(5) Extracts relating to fever, etc., described in the colophon at the end as 'Aggregacio M[agistri] Josequet(?) 'taken from a work by 'Vertrusius' (i.e. Nicholas Bertructus, Chauliac's master); 1496. ff. 25-35b.
(6) A miscellaneous collection of accounts of various diseases, and their cures. ff. 43-120.
(7) 'Tractatus super primo apho[rismo] Hyp[ocratis] 'Quecunque ducere oportet' . . . a famosissimo medicorum monarcha M. Jacobo Despars ... 1494'. Jacobus de Partibus al. Jacques Despars flourished circ. 1380-1465. ff. 122-133b.
(8) 'Antidotarium' of Antonius Guainerius of Pavia (fl. circa 1412- 1445); 1494; followed by a few restoratives of the same physician. The Antidotarium was printed in 1480. ff. 134-142.
(9) Purgatives for certain maladies by Johannes Stephanus. ff. 143b- 144.
(10) 'Antidotarium' of Henri de Mondeville (fl. 1304-1325); 1494. ff. 150-182b.
(11) 'R[ecep]te Pe[tri] de Tussig[na]no super [libro] nono Almansoris [printed in 1483], ... 1494'. Begins in the middle of the chapter 'De ophthalmia', about 24 preceding leaves having been lost. There are copious marginal and foot-notes in another hand and an appendix taken from another MS. of the same work. ff. 183-216b.
(12) 'Tractatus de cautelis urinarum [Bernardi del Gordon[io]' (fl. 1285-1318); 1494. Printed in 1487. ff. 217-219b.
(13) 'Libellus de cautelis medicorum Alberti de Zanchariis [Bononiensis]' (d. circ. 1348); 1496. Begins 'Quoniam multotiens
fortuna'. 'ne colophon at the end gives the name as De Anchariis. ff. 220-222b.
(14) 'Recepte Gentilis de Fulgineo super prima [fen] quarti [libri]' of the Canon of Avicenna; first printed in 1477; transcribed in 1494. A version of them is included in the 1526 edition of the 'Expositio' of Gentilis de Gentilibus ('De Febribus', written in 1344), ff. 13b-128 passim. The very great difference between the two versions is perhaps owing to the fact that the present one was written 'post XVIII annum mee practice', and the printed one 'post 34 annos'. ff. 227-255.
(15) 'Ep[isto]la Arnoldi de Villa nova [de sanguine humano distillato]', addressed to Jacobus de Toleto (wrongly called 'magister Johannes' in this copy); transcribed in 1494, first (?) printed in 1561. ff. 257b-258b.
(16) 'Tractatulus aquarum (sic) mirabilis quem composuit M. Petrus Hyspanus (i.e. Pope John XXI)', beginning 'Aqua mirabilis pro visu conservando'. This is probably the 'Actus mirabilis aquarum' quoted in Egerton MS. 2852 (f. 1) and elsewhere. f. 260.
(17) 'Ad limphandum vinum in ptisicis M. Jo. de Nouo portu'. f. 260b.
(18) 'Regimen preseruativum a peste per D. Jo. Sp[er]' (i.e.? Johannes Spierinck) beginning 'Ex quo plures tempore epidimiali et pestifero solo contagio invaduntur'; followed by receipts of the same physician. ff. 262-265.
(19) Receipts by Cornelius Roelants, of Mechlin, including one for his brother Anselm. f. 265b.
(20) 'Modus generalis faciendi illa que intrant in antidotario Nycolai [Salernitani] et Heben messue' (i.e. Yuhanna ibn Masuwaih). ff. 268- 270b. Paper; ff. 271 (including 35 blank leaves). Octavo. Late XV cent. Belonged, 16th- 17th centt., to Sir Edward Hoby (d. 1607) whose name is written on f. 2, with the motto 'Aurea Libertas'; and in 1697 the MS. was in the possession of his great-grandson, Sir John Hoby, 2nd Bart., of Bisham (see E.
