BANKS COLLECTION. Vol. XLII (ff. 140). Collection of medical receipts; 15th cent. Begins (f. 25) 'Nota quod dicimus illam-medicinam esse calidam' and continues on ff. 25b-130b (contemporary foliation 1-104b), being followed by an alphabetical index (ff. 131-136b) giving references to the original folio numbers. Some supplementary material (also included in the index) has been added on ff. 137-139 and ff. 2-8b (contemporary foliation 111- 113, 114b- 120b). The work is preceded by an alphabetical list of the names of herbs in Latin, with their English equivalents, beginning 'Amarusta anglice Maythe' and ending 'Explicit herbarium quod vocatur synomorum (sic)', ff. 9-25b. Part of the work (ff. 69-117) is in English; the remainder is in Latin. Of the supplementary receipts one is in French ('pour faire bragot. . .', f. 2b) and the others
in Latin or English. Prognostications, in English, of the weather, according to the day of the week on which I January falls, and a note on the signs of the zodiac, occur on ff. 129b-1 30b. Vellum; ff. 140. Octavo. XV cent. Gatherings (excluding fly leaves), i7, ii-xi12, xiii11. Belonged 16th-17th centt. to Sir Edward Hoby, whose initials are on the cover. The name 'Butts' occurs on f. lb and that of 'Neale' on f. 2.
