- Title:
- Confirmation by Alfonso X of Castile and Violante of Aragon, his wife, of a previous grant of lands by Alfonso VIII and Leonor Plantagenet, his wife, to the Hospital del Rey of Burgos
- Scope & Content:
-
Confirmation grant by King Alfonso X [the Wise] of Castile (b. 1221, d. 1284) and Queen Violante of Aragon (b. 1236, d. 1300/1), his wife, of a previous grant given by King Alfonso VIII (b. 1155, d. 1214) and Queen Leonor Plantagenet (b. 1160, d. 1214), his wife, to the Hospital del Rey of Burgos. The Hospital is located next to the Abbey of Santa María la Real de las Huelgas (Burgos), both founded by Alfonso VIII and Leonor Plantagenet.
The confirmation of the grant by Alfonso X and Violante of Aragon is dated 30 December 1254 [Era Hispánica 1292], and is witnessed by 77 prelates and noblemen, as well as the Moorish kings of Granada, Murcia and Niebla. These numerous witnesses were assembled to witness and celebrate that Edward, eldest son of Henry [III], King of England, received knighthood from King Alfonso in Burgos, before his marriage to Eleanor of Castile, the Castilian princess and Alfonso X’s sister, as stated in the dating clause (‘en el anno que don Odoart ffijo primero et heredero del Rey Henrric de Anglatierra recebió cavallería en Burgos del rey don Alfonso’).
The grant bears the king’s signo rodado or personal sign, with a cross in the centre, decorated in green and brown, surrounded by the legend ‘Signo del Rey Don Alfonso’ and by the confirmation of his closest officials in a concentric circle.
No. 11.
Affixed with a leaden bulla, with original strands of yellow and green silk. Obverse: A triple-towered castle of elaborate design, for Castile. The towers and walls embattled, long narrow flat-headed windows; in the central doorway or porch a seated figure of the king with a sceptre. In the central tower, lower storey, a quatrefoiled opening. The legend reads: ‘+ ⋮ ALFONSI ⋮ ILLVSTRIS ⋮ REGIS ⋮ CASTELLE ⋮ ET ⋮ LEGIONIS’. In the reverse: a lion rampant, for Leon. The legend reads: ‘+ S’ ⋮ ALFONSI ⋮ ILLVSTRIS ⋮ REGIS ⋮ CASTELLE ⋮ ET . LEGIONIS ⋮’ (see Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1887-1900), VI, pp. 619-20).
