Grant of Doña Blanca of Portugal, Lady of Santa María de las Huelgas, Burgos, to the abbey of las Huelgas, of rents from the saltworks of Añana and Poza
- Scope & Content:
-
Grant of Doña Blanca of Portugal (b. 1259, d. 1321) Señora [Lady] of las Huelgas [Santa María de las Huelgas, Burgos], daughter of Alfonso III, King of Portugal (b. 1210, d. 1279), and granddaughter of Alfonso X, King of Castile (b. 1221, d. 1284).
Doña Blanca grants rents from the saltworks (salinas) of Añana and Poza to the abbey of las Huelgas, and rents to the Hospital del Rey, and several other chaplaincies, churches and religious houses in Burgos, as well as providing some guidelines for the services to be done in her memory after her death.
This is one of three original letters made at the same time ('una de las tres cartas que yo ... mandé faser’). The other two survive in the Archivo del Monasterio de las Huelgas de Burgos and the Archivo de la Catedral de Burgos, dated 31 December 1313 [Era Hispánica 1357].
Endorsed: in a 15th-century hand, 'hospital del Rey seys mill mrs. [?] Era de [?]’; previous references: ‘caxón 18, nº 44' (crossed out), ‘nº xxj. caxó[n] xj’ and ‘cajón 21, legº 1º nº 19’.
Affixed with Blanca’s seal, self-coloured, opaque, fine but only the upper half remains, with a tape or coarse ribbon of coloured thread. Obverse: pointed oval, a representation of the abbess, full-face, standing, veiled. Includes the legend: ‘+ SIGILLV ….. DE : LAS : OLGAS. Reverse: a plain cross, within a bordure or orle, composed of (eight?) small vesical/shaped compartments, containing alternately a lion rampant for Leon, and a triple-towered castle for Castile. Includes the legend: ‘+ FILIE : D[OMI]NI AL….. ARBIIS (Algarbiis)’ (Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1887-1900), VI, p. 642).
