- Title:
- Confirmation by the Catholic Monarchs, Isabel and Fernando, to the Hospital del Rey, Burgos, of the rights of free pasture
- Scope & Content:
-
The Catholic Monarchs, Isabel [I of Castile] (b. 1469, d. 1504) and Fernando [II of Aragon] (b. 1452, d. 1516) confirm a grant or privilegio given to the Hospital del Rey of Burgos. Dated 5 December 1476.
The original grant was given on 6 November 1338 [Era Hispánica 1376] by King Alfonso XI to the Hospital del Rey, allowing their cattle (5,000 cows and 75 mares) free pasture throughout the kingdom. This charter contains the previous confirmations made by their predecessors: by King Enrique II in the cortes of Toro, 10 September 1371 [Era Hispánica 1409]; by King Juan I in the cortes of Burgos, 24 August 1379 [Era Hispánica 1417]; by King Enrique III in the cortes of Burgos, 20 February 1392; by King Juan II in Valladolid, 9 February 1420; by King Enrique IV in Badajoz, 18 March 1456.
Endorsed: front cover: in a 16th-century hand: 'Previllejo y confirmaçión del Rey don Ferna[n]do y de la Reyna / doña Ysabel de çincomil vacas y sete[n]ta y çinco / yeguas francas’ and 'limosna [?]'; dorse: 15th-century endorsement from 1485, when the document was presented to ask for a license (licencia); 18th-century summary of the document and inscription regarding the original grant; previous reference together with a small summary of the document.
Marginal annotations on the left-hand side margin, which function like navigation aids, giving the years and the names of the kings that have confirmed this grant previously, in two hands, probably from the 18th century.
Affixed by a leaden bulla, with strands of crimson, blue, yellow, green and white silk. Obverse: The King, in armour, with sword, cap-shaped helmet, and large shield of arms, riding on a caparisoned horse pacing to the left. The armorial bearings of the shield are very indistinct, but apparently similar to those describe for the rev. The legend reads: ‘+ FERNANDVS : DEI : GRACIA : REX : CASTELLE : LEGIONIS: ARAGONVM : ET : SEC’. Reverse: The Queen, full-face, with long hair, crowned, in the right hand a sceptre, in the left hand a shield of arms: quarterly; I, 4, quarterly; i., iv. Castile, ii., iii. Leon; 2, 3. Per pale, dex. four pales, Aragon; 2, 3. quarterly; per saltire, in chief and point four pales, in each flank an eagle displayed, Sicily. The Queen is seated on a carved throne with pinnacles and cresting. The legend reads: ‘+ HELISABET : DEI : GRA[CIA] : REGINA : CASTELLE : LEGIONIS : ARAGONVM : ET : SECILIE’ (Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1887-1900), VI, pp. 628-29).
