Originally housed at Welbeck Abbey and deposited in the British Museum between 1947 and 1967 by William Arthur Henry Cavendish-Bentinck (1893-1977), 7th Duke of Portland, as 'The Portland Loan' (Loan MS 29).
Along with Add Chs 76671-76767 and Add MSS 70001-70523, were accepted by the Government in lieu of Capital Transfer Tax, March 1986, and, on the advice of the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts and in accordance with the wishes of the Portland executors, allocated to the British Library in May 1987.
