A typescript version of a scientific paper on rare alleles, a letter from ?D. A. Hopkinson to Price, and related notes and computer printouts.
Card folder: 'Rare variants paper'
1. Notes, folded sheet of squared paper, handwritten, blue and red ballpoint, pencil, listing of findings (f. 1).
2. Results printout, photocopy (f. 2) with annotations in red ballpoint, probabilities for different loci.
3. Computer printout, large format, fanfold, 23 October 1973, probabilities for different loci (ff. 3-4).
4. Computer printout, large format, single detached sheet from fanfold, 11/04/74, data, with annotations in pencil, blue ballpoint and red ballpoint (f. 5).
5. Notes, photocopy (ff. 6-8), tabulated data output, bar chart ('Distribution of heterozygosities for the 43 loci…') and graph ('Heterozygosity'), with annotations red ballpoint and pencil.
6. Tabulated data, carbon copy typescript (f. 9), 'Comparison of heterozygosities between "monomorphic" and "polymorphic" loci'.
7. Tabulated data with footnotes, photocopy (ff. 10-13). 'TABLE 1', 'Incidence of rare electrophoretic variants at 43 loci in unrelated Europeans', pencil annotations.
8. Notes (f. 14) black ballpoint, program workings.
9. Letter (f. 15), blue ballpoint, from 'Hoppy' to George Price: 'I forgot to tell you on the phone that we discovered a mistake in Table 1 when we were checking the proofs.' 'Unfortunately it affects all your calculations and we are sorry not to have noticed it earlier'. ?‘Hoppy’ is D. A. Hopkinson, medical geneticist, colleague and collaborator of Harry Harris.
10. Tabulated data, photocopy (ff. 16-17), 'TABLE 2', with pencil annotations.
11. Notes, handwritten, pencil (f. 18), genetic aspects.
12. Footnotes, photocopy (f. 19), 'Table 2. Incidence of rare electrophoretic phenotypes and individual gene frequencies in Europeans'.
13. Tabulated data with footnotes, photocopy (ff. 20-21), 'TABLE 3', 'Gene frequencies at loci where two or more alleles have frequencies > 0.005 in Europeans'.
14. Manuscript article for submission to be published, typescript (ff. 22-44, paginated 1-22 with an additional sheet between pp. 18 and 19 labelled 'Legends for figures'), with occasional annotations mainly in pencil. The article begins: 'Inherited variants of many different enzymes have been discovered by electrophoretic techniques.' It continues: 'However, so far not much attention has been paid to relatively rare alleles which also give rise to electrophoretically detectable enzyme variants'. 'The purpose of the present paper is to present an extensive body of data which gives information about the incidence of such rare alleles over a wide range of loci.'
