Scope & Content:

Contains files pertaining to legacies left to the Literary Fund – these principally contain details of the wills in which the bequests were made and correspondence concerning them. Also contains three reports on proposed changes to the Fund’s investment strategies and the autobiography of Thomas Newton, who left a substantial legacy to the Fund which provided one of its most significant early sources of income. Many of the files are annotated by Octavian Blewitt, the Fund’s secretary from 1839 to 1884 and his successor, Arthur Llewelyn Roberts; the annotations give additional details of the legacies and reports.
