Private Letters, vol. 3. Correspondence with the Irish Secretary, the Board of Trade, and the War Office. Major correspondents include George Wyndham (Chief Secretary for Ireland), Gerald William Balfour, 2nd Earl of Balfour (President of the Board of Trade), St John Brodrick, 1st Earl of Midleton (Secretary of State for War 1900-1903), Hugh Oakeley Arnold-Forster (Secretary of State for War 1903-1905) and Frederick Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts (Commander-in-Chief of the British Army). Much of the War Office correspondence relates to the controversy over Sir Frederick Maurice’s official History of the War in South Africa 1899-1902, which was censored before publication to remove discussion of political matters.
