Correspondence of Lord Lansdowne, chiefly relating to foreign policy matters and dating from his period as Foreign Secretary, 1900-1905, though with some earlier and later correspondence. Contents as follows:
1. Correspondence with Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury and Prime Minister; 1900-1902. Includes a typewritten memorandum on King Leopold and the Congo, 29 December 1900, and a printed Foreign Office memorandum on Russia’s military strength in Central Asia, 25 June 1901.
2. Correspondence with James Gascoyne-Cecil, Viscount Cranborne and later 4th Marquess of Salisbury; 1900-1922. Includes a printed Cabinet memorandum on the Origin of Offensive Policy in Somaliland, with annotations by Lansdowne, 7 November 1902.
3. Correspondence with William Waldegrave Palmer, 2nd Earl of Selborne; 1897-1921
4. Letters from Joseph Powell Williams, M.P. (Financial Secretary to the War Office), and Albert Vickers, on the Ordnance Factories and reported problems with the new Vickers gun; 1899.
