The letter to Buccleugh, written in 'dark melancholy', concerns the financial difficulties of the Scottish Bank: 'The fall of the Stocks of late owing to the very critical situation of this Country have exposed the Bank to numerous & heavy applications for London money'. The letter concludes: 'we reckon ourselves bound in duty to communicate to your Grace the ticklish circumstances in which we are presently placed & that the Credit of this Country absolutely depends upon our society being supported'.
