- Contains note signed by C Mason, July 1886: 'I know of no such book as this, relative to the collections of marine letters prior to 1838. I presume it was instituted by my father (J O Mason) when the Marine Dept. was created in 1837 and he was made Secretary of it. The Bombay Collections beginning in 1831 (Bombay being the Head of the Indian Navy) enabled my father to have ready access to the correspondence for 6 years before his department was formed'.
