- Title:
- Money lending and usury records [16 May 1927-25 Mar 1945]
- Scope & Content:
- 1) A record of a loan for 12 rupees. 2) Receipt from money lender for a colossal 85.8 rupees. 3) Bride price. Rs [20? Second digit illegible]. Contains a fabulous fingerprint-signature. Concerns bride price [Bru bride]. The line showing the rupee total has been ripped out, perhaps significantly. 4) Written by a woman who married a husband but didn't receive bride price. Husband had bought her a quilt worth Rs 20, similar to the price of a mithun (ox). Unique in being a surviving source written by female Bru [doubly an outsider, by both gender and ethnicity.] 5) Monetary withdrawal. Of a total Rs 600. Contains check details. 6) Usury: terms and conditions. Author borrowed money on condition of the construct of six local boats. Lender able to turn the boats away if these are deemed unacceptable. Conditions of repayment in case of death. Five Bengali witnesses, who sign in Bangla script. No date, though likely the same provenience as Document 5 (1933), as lender is mentioned. Date ripped off bottom. 7) Author, witness is a 'Lal'=likely a chief. Notes how one person acted as uncle to daughters of one father. When the daughter is marrying, the person should therefore get a Pusum [a bride price kickback, of sorts] of 10 Rs. Unique document in showing bride price flexibility. By simple friendship, the person claims entitlement to bride price.
