- Title:
- Notaria de Riohacha - Protocolo 1835-1837 Tomo Unico [1835 - 1837]
- Scope & Content:
- Protocolo No. 3 is divided into four books: the first is from 1835, the next 1836, and the last two 1837. The four books have indexes that seem to have been put together when the books were bound. Documents, or public instruments as they were called, include: Certificates of mortgages and letters; certificates of manumission of slaves and servants; powers to trade; powers to represent constituents in legal disputes; powers to administer assets; and powers to claim, pay or raise money; public works to secure guardianship of orphans and curatorial judgement; property sales such as of wastelands, houses, plots, and boats; administration and cancellation of contracts; grants of assets to children; certification of dowries; and, protests to retain goods or of unsatisfied commercial transactions, among others. All documents were officially recorded by the Interim Notary Public of Cantón, José Antonio Cabral. When the documents came from elsewhere they were drawn up by the clerk of that site. For that reason they appear within the protocolo documents produced in villages near Riohacha, including Tomarrazón, Molino, and Fonseca, and abroad, as in Maracaibo, Curação, and Jamaica. There is also a document written in Dutch from Jamaica and translated by the official interpreter and translator of the government of Nueva Granada.
