Memoir of Thereza Story-Maskelyne, (1923). 82 pages. Bound manuscript illustrated with watercolours, sketches, photographs and prints dated between 1857 and 1923. An additional 11 pages of text bound with twine is attached to the inside-back cover. There is also a print of an illustrated quote from John Ruskin included loose within the volume. Text concerns Thereza’s life after her marriage to Nevil Story-Maskelyne in 1858 and includes details of Nevil’s work as a mineralologist at the British Museum and the Story-Maskelyne’s social circle in London with accounts of Anthony Panizzi and John Ruskin among others. There are also further details of other scientific interests. Nevil Story-Maskelyne’s political career as a Liberal from 1880-1895 is explained within the context of prevailing social attitudes to politics and reforms to the electoral system around the time of the 1880 election. Further chapters concern the 1883 eruption of a volcano on Krakatoa consisting of various eyewitness accounts copied from daily newspapers as well as Thereza’s descriptions of localised meteorological effects, descriptions of various holidays taken by the Story-Maskelynes, notes on Wiltshire Christmas customs including ‘mummers’, and finally the ‘petrology’ of Stonehenge from 1878, and the discovery in 1923 of an ancient avenue leading from the Stonehenge monument using aerial photography.
