- Judiciary documents contained in Box 01. Document 1: (1828) Record of emancipation of Libana Victoria da Silva, Creole slave of Balbina da Silva, a native of Cametá, who recognized that for many years that slave delivered many and elevated services to her. For those, she deserved freedom. She also explained that after her death the Creole Libana should not be captured or even be subjected to any kind of captivity. Document 2: (1828) Record that acknowledges the freedom of Roza Maria do Carmo, African slave from the ‘nation’ Rebollo, mother of the Creole slave Genuína da Anunciação, both properties of Caetano José Pinto, a resident of Muaná, who of free will and spontaneously gives freedom to both. Document 3: (1828) Record of conditional letter of manumission of Maria Joanna, Black slave of Antonio do Espírito Santo, who by his free will and without constraint gives Maria Joanna her freedom after his death. Document 4: (1828) Record of the letter of emancipation of the newborn and baptized Creole slave João, son of the Mulatto slave Claudiana, property of Francisca Azevedo de Mendonça, who gives him complete freedom. Document 5: (1828) Record of the letter of emancipation of Jacinto, African slave from the ‘nation’ Mandingo, who paid 500,000 réis to his former master, Francisco Gonsalves Lima, to buy his freedom. Document 6: (1828) Record of the letter of emancipation of the newborn Feliciana, daughter of Manoel José and Igrancia Maria, both Black slaves of Lieutenant José Cardoso Castello Branco, all residents of Mojú. Feliciana was to be freed after being baptized at the Cathedral of the See in Belém. Her godparents were Miguel dos Anjos and the Black Severina. Document 7: (1828) Record of the letter of emancipation of Vitorina, Black slave of Maria do Carmo, married to Lt. João Correia Miranda do Carmo, residents of Mojú. Maria do Carmo, by not knowing how to read and write, asked her husband to provide a record of freedom of the slave Vitorina. Document 8: (1828) Record of the letter of emancipation of Vitoria Roza, Cafuza and Creole slave of Francisco José da Silva. Vitoria Roza paid to her former master the sum of 300,000 réis, which guaranteed her freedom forever. Document 9: (1829) Record of the letter of emancipation of the Cafuza slave Mariana Antonia da Conceição and her children (Antonio Manuel, Serafim dos Anjos, Maria dos Santos, and Bárbara Maria), all slaves of Francisco de Sá de Moraes. All they must be considered free persons after their master’s death for the good services rendered. Document 10: (1829) Record of sale of the Ladino slaves Joaquim, Fernando, Jorge, Maria Ritta, Joanna, Jesabel, Maria Joaquina, along with the Moleque slaves Manoel Luiz and Ambrósio and the slave child Carlota, belonging to João Pereira Vilaça, who sold them for 1,600,000 réis to Manoel José Antonio. Document 11: (1829) Record of the letter of emancipation of Ana Maria da Conceição, slave of the late Margarida dos Anjos, a resident of Vigia, who before passing away instructed her heir, Diogo Dias Fróes de Jesus, to free Ana for good services rendered. Document 12: (1829) Record of the letter of emancipation of Manoel da Silva, Black slave of Francisco Pereira Braga, who raised him as a son, explaining that after his death the slave should be freed by his heirs. Document 13: (1829) Record of the donation of the Black slave João illegible and the Creole slave Cezario, valued at 1,000,000 réis and 700,000 réis respectively, by Fidelis Carvalho dos Passos and Anna Joaquina Fidelis de Souza Pereira Pinto to Manoel Candido. Document 14: (1829) Record of conditional freedom to Izabel, Creole slave of Maria Thereza de Vasconcellos, a resident of the Vila de Oeiras, who declares Izabel free after her death for good service. Document 15: (1829) Record of letter of emancipation to Candido Ferreira, son of Micaella, African slave from the ‘nation’ Bijagó, issued by Doratheia de Souza, Pedro Ferreira’s widow, residents of the Engenho (sugar mill) of Mucajúba. Candido received his letter of emancipation after the death of his master. Document 16: (1829) Record sale of the Black slave Bazilha and her daughters, all they were property of João Antonio da Cunha. Document 17: (1829) Record of the letter of emancipation of Maria da Soledade, 9 years old, Mulatto slave, daughter of Maria do Espírito Santo, Black slave of Manoel Antonio, master blacksmith. Document 18: (1829) Record of the letter of emancipation of the minors Antonia da Silva, Maria da Silva, and Francisca da Silva, Mulatto slaves, daughters of Maria, African slave from the ‘nation’ Cação, property of Domingos Ignacio da Silva, a resident of the river Acará, who by free will give them freedom. Document 19: (1829) Record of the letter of emancipation of the minor Antonia, Black slave, daughter of Antonia, Black slave of Mariana Carneiro who also explains that at any time her heirs would have any power over the said slave. Document 20: (1829) Record of the letter of emancipation of Bento, blacksmith, Black/Creole slave of Antonia Pinto. Bento received his manumission after paying the sum of 300,000 réis to his owner. Document 21: (1829) Record of the donation made by Sebastião Ignácio José Rodrigues of a young woman named Maria do Nascimento to his daughter Inocencia de Nazareth. Rodrigues explains that his daughter raised the said slave and, for that, she could not be included in his post-mortem inventory. Document 22: (1829) Record of the conditional letter of emancipation of Maria Francisca, Black slave of Bartholomeu Dias Guerreiro, who frees said slave after his death. Document 23: (1829) Record of the letter of emancipation of Julio de Souza, Cafuzo slave of Feliciana Maria de Souza, the widow of the deceased Alexandre José Delgado. She claims that Julio, by his good services, deserves to enjoy complete freedom, and that all his heirs to be born should be supported by the Free Womb Law (Lei do Ventre Livre). Document 24: (1830) Record of the letter of emancipation of the minor Manoel Santorio, Mulatto slave of Father Ignacio Antunes de Frestas. Monoel’s mother, a Cafuza slave named illegible Maria, had been lent to the priest’s nephew, Bento Sanhes de Brito, and now receives letter of emancipation along with her son for good services. Document 25: (1830) Record of the letter of emancipation of Valentina, Mulatto slave of Narcizo Gomes do Amaral, who of free will and spontaneously, without charging any onus, grants freedom to his slave.
