- APEP’s collection of the Judiciary is composed of a large number of documents formally drawn up by the various courts, judgeships and public notaries in the State of Pará. The special series “Slaves” was almost entirely digitized. The documents in this series relate to lawsuits in which black slaves appear as main characters. With the exception of a single document in which a black slave was denounced as a co-author of an assault, most documents deal with the procedures by which a slave or a group of slaves put justice in action to obtain a legal letter of emancipation. Until 1871, the process for obtaining freedom depended largely on the will of the master and personal relationships established between master and slave. From 28 September 1871 onwards, however, with the enactment of the Law 2040 (also known as “Law of the Free Womb” or simply “Law of 1871”), state institutions started to intervene more directly in the master-slave relationship and in the process of emancipation. The 1871 Act established three important points: 1) from that date, all children born to a slave mother would be considered free; 2) created the Emancipation Fund with public funds (taxes and fees), and; 3) facilitated the buying process of freedom through litigation initiated by slaves. By law, all slaves in Brazil should be compulsorily registered with a Board especially created for this purpose and, subsequently, slaves were ranked in terms of priority of those to be freed by the Emancipation Fund. Among the criteria, the law granted to slaves the possibility of forming nest eggs to purchase their own freedom at the price declared by their master in the Emancipation Fund enrollment. Once achieved the necessary money to purchase their freedom, any slave could ask the courts to proceed with the opening of a process for his/her emancipation. Each process received the name of “Auto Civil de Liberdade,” which like all legal processes and procedures contained several steps before reaching its end. Extent of original material: 36 series, plus a special series on slaves (Série: Escravos).

- Material in this collection was created as part of the EAP323 Endangered African diaspora collections of the state of Pará in the Amazon region of Brazil project. It created digital copies of records held by the Arquivo Público do Estado do Pará. In 1891, scattered archival collections of the former State of Grão Pará and Maranhão were incorporated to the public library. In 1901, the arrangement was formalized with the creation of the Biblioteca e Arquivo Público do Estado do Pará and remained unaltered until 1986, when library and archive became autonomous government agencies; both subordinate to the Secretary of Culture. It is one of the most important archives of the Amazon region due the privileged situation of Belém, which remained capital of the Portuguese Amazonia for several years. It houses an enormous number of manuscripts; mainly from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The collection holds a unique historical value for the knowledge of the local history and its connections with Europe, Africa, the Americas, and other parts of Brazil. The documentation is divided into three major collections covering subjects related to Executive, Legislative, and Judicial powers during the three major time periods of the Brazilian history: Colonial Period (1500-1822), Imperial Period (1822-1889), and Republican Period (since 1889). The collection of the Judiciary was formed randomly through the years. At different time and circumstances, judges and public notaries concerned with the safeguard of their collections sent archival material to the APEP.

- The APEP holds approximately four million documents divided into three major collections: Executive, Judiciary, and Legislative. The APEP arranged the Judiciary collection using the following criteria: 1) by place (city/town/county); 2) by former creator/owner (judgeship, public notary), and; 3) chronologically (by document – although sometimes the chronology may be impaired by researchers handling the material).
