Document 1: Carolina, slave, petitioned emancipation from her master, Emílio Augusto da Cunha Pereira, alleging she was not enrolled in the list of the Emancipation Fund as required by the Law n. 2040 of 28 September 1871 (Article 8, clause 2), also known as the “Law of 1871” or the “Free Womb Law.” Jayme Augusto Oliveira da Gama, scrivener. Document 2: Francisco da Silva Figueiredo and his wife Constância Maria G. F. Figueiredo donated their slave, Angélica, to Antônio da Silva Cruz, Pedro Nolasco da Silva Cruz and Etelvina da Silva Cruz. Jayme Augusto Oliveira da Gama, scrivener. Document 3: Felippe José Ferreira solicited the emancipation of his son, Manuel da Silva, minor, slave of Raimundo Thomaz da Silva, resident of the Abaeté County, and offered the amount of 400,000 réis, which was accepted by the judge despite the defendant’s protests. Document 4: Civil proceedings initiated by the Fiscal Procurator of the Treasury who had finished the classification of the slaves to be freed by the quota designed by the Emancipation Fund to the municipality of Mojú. The procurator informed the judge that the slave Martinha had been classified in first place along with her children Francisco, Dionisia, Tito, Raimunda, and Angela. Therefore the procurator required the judge to take all necessary measures for the legal emancipation of said slaves. Marcelino Marques Lima, scrivener. Document 5: Isidoro, Black man, resident at Itapecurú, claimed that in 1874 he had deposited the amount of 400,000 réis on the hands of João Pereira da Silva Ramos, who gave him a receipt (appendix). This money would be used to constitute a peculium to buy Isidoro’s freedom. However, he had been freed at no charge and now wanted his money back. João Ramos had died and his widow, Merenciana Paschôa da Conceição Ramos, and their sons did not want to return the money. Tiberio Augusto Ferreira da Motta, solicitor.
