Document 1: Margarida Maria da Conceição, slave, stated she had deposited 330,000 réis on the hands of José Rodrigues Ramos, plus 150,000 réis that she had received from late Domingos de Figueiredo. Both amounts would serve to buy her freedom. She requested the judge ordered that, at the prompt of twenty-four hours, said Ramos appeared before justice with her money, what was eventually done. Antonio Ayres de Lacerda Chermont, judge. João Luis Peleja, scrivener. Document 2: On behalf of Isabel Victoria Serrão, slave, Heraclio Vespasiano Fisch Romano, solicited her freedom alleging that her certificate of emancipation (carta de liberdade) had been canceled due to a legal mistake. Captain Francisco de Paula Correa Lobato, master. Antonio Ayres de Lacerda Chermont, judge. João Luis Peleja, scrivener. Document 3: Manoel Rodrigues, Black/Creole freedman, presented before justice his certificate of emancipation (carta de liberdade), as well as the ones issued to his sister, Camilla Maria da Conceição (Mulatto), and her three minor daughters Luisa, Joanna, and Espiridiana. He asked the judge to legally validate these private certificates to strengthen them. Luis Antonio Correa was their master and issued their letters of emancipation before his death. He had received said slaves by inheritance from his brother Severino Antonio Correa. João Lourenço Paes de Sousa, judge. João Luis Peleja, scrivener. Document 4: Anacleto, Black slave of Ignacio Joaquim Cordeiro, was presented before justice by Belém’s chief of police. Anacleto said that he had the necessary amount (600,000 réis) to buy his freedom and that his master had agreed with the arrangement. Francisco Carlos Mariano, solicitor. Antonio Francisco Pinheiro and Carlos Hypolito de Santa Helena, judges. Marcelino Marques de Lima, scrivener. Document 5: Theodorico Constantino da Silveira (Pardo/Mulatto) stated that since August of the previous year he had been freed by his late master, Fidelis Constantino da Silveira Barros. Theodorico said that he had been living as a free person since then and now, with his master’s death, he feared that his heirs might want to re-enslave him. Emilio de Moraes Dias, solicitor. Antonio Francisco Pinheiro, judge. Document 6: Maria José, Parda/Mulatto, and her son Jorge, both slaves of major Gaspar Valente Cordeiro, solicited to be nominated a solicitor for them and that an evaluation of their price was conducted in order to launch the proceedings for their legal emancipation. Carlos Hypolito de Santa Helena, judge. Marcelino Marques de Lima, scrivener. Document 7: Felicidade Maria da Conceição, Black, claimed she had been freed by her late mistress Alexandrina Magno Villas Boas, but her heirs had mortgaged her to a third party. Antonio Paulino de Souza Uchôa, solicitor. Marcelino Marques de Lima, scrivener. Document 8: Anna Maria do Carmo, Parda/Mulatto slave of João da Fonseca Freitas, farmer, a resident of Marajó-Assú, solicited to be legally freed because her master had declared several times that she was free in the presence of various witnesses. She was accompanied by her uncle João Carlos Mariano and the retailer Antonio de Almeida Silva. José Henriques Cordeiro de Castro Junior, solicitor. Marcelino Marques de Lima, scrivener. Document 9: Bernardino Rodrigues Valente do Couto said that Francisco, slave of Francisco de Souza Mesquita, a resident of Manaus, was put under his care by the chief of police because his master was treating him badly. He demands an appraisal of the slave’s price in order to initiate emancipation legal proceedings. Heraclio Vespasiano Firch Romano, solicitor. Marcelino Marques de Lima, scrivener. Document 10: Theodora and her minor children, Luis, Emilia, and Joanna, slaves of Firmino José de Souza, were freed by fair payment. During the proceedings, the three children were put under the care of Theodora’s life companion, Eloy, Black, who would keep them until the final judicial decision. Theodora died before the case’s closure. Her master demanded then that her children should be given back to him. The judge complied and ordered the children to be sent back.
