Document 1: In 1812, the financially stressed heirs of the late Joanna Maria, wife of the already deceased Francisco José de Abreu, conducted a public auction of Maria Antonia, African slave (“nação mexicongo”). She was appraised at 150,000 réis, and was acquired shortly after by Antonio Joaquim Ferreira de Moraes for 175,000 réis. Manuel José da Motta, scrivener.
