- Title:
- Documents from Judiciary of Belém - Judgment of the Ombudsman of the Capital - Box 01 1826
- Scope & Content:
- Judiciary documents contained in Box 01. Document 1: In 1826, Narcisa do Carmo, Black slave, concubine of her master José Antonio Ribeiro, received from him authorization to demand before justice the right to inherit the assets left by her late sister, Severina Rosa, freed Black, single, no children. In order to prove the sisterhood she presented both certificates of baptism issued by the Church of Santa Anna do Rio Capim. Her certificate showed that she was baptized by the vicar Domingos de Sousa in 11 November 1787, being the daughter of Rosa (Black slave of the late Alberto Alves), and an “incognito father.” Severina’s certificate, from the records of the same church, showed that she was baptized in 8 December 1778, bearing the name of the same vicar and parental information. During the proceedings, Narcisa’s master freed her (probably because slaves did not have inheritance legal rights). Shortly after, in 3 April 1826, Narcisa died. Her daughter, Rosa Maria da Encarnação, “crioula,” Mulatto, also received a certificate of emancipation from José Antonio Ribeiro (who was not only her master but also her father) in order to carry the proceedings on. Proceedings’ final verdict was favorable to her. João Marques de Matos, solicitor. Luis Antonio de Meneses and Antonio dos Reis de Macedo, scriveners.
