- Judiciary documents contained in Box 2. Documents: In 1851, the newborn slaves Severino and João were put to legal appraisal by the Santa Casa de Misericórdia (or Hospital do Senhor Bom Jesus da Caridade), a hospital linked to the Catholic Church. The Santa Casa owned their parents, Sabino Marcos (Black, carpenter, married to the Black slave Maria do Carmo) and Lizarda (Cafuza, single or widow), respectively. Lizarda offered 50,000 réis for the manumission of her son. She received the money “from a benefactor who gave it as alms for such a fair end.” Sabino offered whatever the legal evaluation would be. The newborns were appraised in 50,000 réis each and received their certificate of emancipation after payment. Antonio Leitão da Cunha, judge. Antonio Rodrigues d’Almeida, scrivener.
