- Judiciary documents contained in Box 22. Document 1: In 1888, Jezuina, Black slave of the commendator Alvaro Pinto de Pontes e Souza, wanted to indemnify her master by paying for her freedom the amount under which she was enrolled in the Fundo de Emancipação (emancipation fund), according to the law of 28 September 1885. For not being able to represent herself before court, she requested the appointment of a public solicitor to follow the proceedings. Jezuina’s brother, Florencio José Cura Sodré, freed Blackman, followed close upon the process and assisted her in all instances until it ended. It has to be noted that the final judicial decision, favorable to Jezuina, happened barely forty days before the complete abolition of slavery in Brazil (13/05/1888). Justo Leite Chermont, solicitor.
