Document 01: (1872) Legal proceedings to free Anna, Black slave, and her children Veronica, Manuel, Leoncio and Esperidião, who belonged to the family of the deceased Pedro da Costa Barral. Anna was married to Lourenço Antonio da Costa, freed Black, overseer. Raymundo R. Leal Castello Branco, solicitor. Joaquim Martins da Silva, scrivener.Document 02: (1873) Legal proceedings to ensure the safeguard of the peculium intended to free slaves enrolled in the emancipation fund. José Gonçalves Nogueira, scrivener. Document 03: (1874) Legal proceedings for the arbitration on the case of Salustiano, Black slave of Gil Antonio Pedroza. Salustiano was priced at 1,000,000 (a million or one ‘conto’ de) réis. Guilherme de Jesus Mesquita and José Antonio Pará, solicitors. Joaquim Martins da Silva, scrivener.Document 04: (1874) Legal proceedings to free Innocencia, Mulatto slave, belonging to Michaela Angela dos Passos and José Antonio Siqueira. Innocencia presents certificates issued in both cities of Cametá and Belém proving that she was not enrolled in the emancipation fund to receive letter of manumission. Joaquim Martins da Silva, scrivener.Document 05: (1874) Legal proceedings for the delivery of peculium belonging to Leopoldino Alberto do Nascimento, Black slave of Major Bernadino de Senna Lameira. Lameira demanded 1,000,000 (a million or one ‘conto’ de) réis for Nascimento’s freedom. The slave had saved only 600,000 réis, which was not accepted by his master. However the general solicitor alleged that Lameira had failed on enrolling Nascimento in the emancipation fund and, for that, the slave was by law entitled to receive his freedom for free. Joaquim Martins da Silva, scrivener.Document 06: (1875) Legal record of public auction where three Black slaves belonging to the minor heirs of the late Francisco Antonio da Silva where purchased by Antonio Andrea Capper as follows: Torquato, 18 years old (1,000,000 réis); Angélica, 19 yrs old (700,000 réis); and her daughter, Christina, 9 yrs old (550,000 réis). Rufina belonged to the late Mariana Rodrigues Martins and was put to sell by the executor of her will, Francisco Fernandes de Monteiro. Major Raymundo Alves da Cunha bought Rufina’s “freedom.” In exchange, she would have to work for him during the next six years. His owner, Lourenço Paes de Sousa, priced him in 900,000 réis. However, Sebastião complained that his name did not appear on the lists of the emancipation fund of Belém despite the fact that the names of his whole family did. Her mother, Maria Antonia, deposited the amount of 300,000 réis in her behalf for that was the price she was appraised by her master on the lists of the emancipation fund. Canegundes had three sons that she also wanted to be freed by the emancipation fund: Antonio, Black, 7 years old; Raimundo, Mulatto, 5 yrs old (sent to Soure); and Manoel, Black, 4 yrs old.
