Lee-Warner Collection: Bombay Presidency. William Lee Warner C.S. Photographer(s): Shepherd and Robertson, Samuel Bourne, Bourne and Shepherd, Edmund David Lyon, J. Johnston, John Edward Saché, Willoughby Wallace Hooper and others unknown.
- Scope & Content:
-
Half-leather bound album, measuring 390 x 310 mm and containing 170 mounted prints with manuscript captions, plus two loose prints. The title as above is stamped in gold on the front cover. The album is in poor physical condition. The contents are mainly architectural and topographical views from throughout Western and Northern India, including a number of E. D. Lyon's views of Ahmadabad. There is some confusion over the identity of the photographer whose prints are signed 'J. J.': in the Archaeological Survey collection there are several views of Ellora also signed 'J. J.' (although in a different style), which are attributed to 'Johnston' (no forename) in Theodor Bloch's 1900 printed list of Indian Museum and India Office negatives. These views are adjacent to a series which have the same 'J. J.' signature as in this album, but the printed catalogue attributes this group to the photographer D. H. Sykes. The prints also appear later in a Deen Dayal album (Photo 97), suggesting that Deen Dayal acquired the negatives at some stage.
