Sir Richard Carnac Temple Collection: Views of monuments in India. Photographer(s): Gill, Robert
- Scope & Content:
-
Collection of loose prints some of which are mounted. The majority have either contemporary or modern captions, or a combination of both. The photographs mostly depict temples and tombs in Bihar and Bengal and at Nasik and Ajanta. Prints 1-10 which show views of Nasik carry a covering letter which reads: 'Nassick 28th February 1878. [To] M. Ramsay Esquire, Collector. Sir, I beg most respectfully to forward 9 plates or photographic views of the temples on the Godavery - a few of which His Excellency the Governor had visited this morning: the tenth plate is that of Camp Deolalee Barracks; I hope His Excellency will approve of them as clear photographs & be pleased to keep them as specimens of fine arts represented in these temples of more than a century old. With my profound respect...I beg to remain your most obedient servant, Byramji Jehangheer[?]'. Prints 42-103 represent views in Bihar by Thomas Fraser Peppé. The views are described by the photographer in Letter No 98, Public Dept., April 1871, a copy of which is in the Prints, Drawings & Photographs section.
Sir Richard Carnac Temple (1850-1931), Indian Army officer, administrator in Burma and the Andaman Islands and writer on anthropological subjects.
