Yule Collection: Album of Portraits Photographer(s): Rowe, Josiah
- Scope & Content:
-
Half-leather bound album (covers detached) belonging to Sir Henry Yule, measuring 417x310mm, containing portraits of officers of the Bengal Engineers. The majority of the portraits are identified either by their signatures cut out from letters and pasted beneath the photographs, or by brief pencilled annotations. A few prints have been removed from the album at an unknown date.
A few of the prints are probably by William Glynn and taken around 1857. In that year he exhibited a number of views and portraits taken at Agra, Srinagar and Kashmir in the Photographic Society of Bengal Exhibition. Amongst these was a portrait of Lieut. Col. Waugh with 36" theodolite. This is almost certainly the portrait in lot 600 of the Christie's Photographic Sale of 24 April 1986, and prints 2 and 3 of this album were evidently taken on the same occasion.
Sir Henry Yule (1820-1889), Bengal Engineers 1840-62; Member of the Council of India 1875-89; scholar and author on Indian and Central Asian history and geography.
