View of the interior of a workshop in the arsenal in Kabul. This photograph is clearly the original from which the illustration in 'The Graphic' (20 May 1893, p. 561) was made, with figures added. The illustration is there titled: 'The Ameer of Afghanistan's Workshops at Kabul: the Interior of the Arsenal.' The text accompanying the illustration reads: 'When the British Army withdrew from Kabul in 1880 it is not too much to say that throughout the whole country of Afghanistan there was no such thing as a machine working by steam. At the present day the Ameer has a complete arsenal in full swing, turning out cannon, Martini-Henry rifles, and solid-drawn brass cartridges in large numbers; minting-machines capable of coining 60,000 rupees per diem; a new workshop with all the necessary machinery for rolling metal into sheets; a soap factory, and, in fact, a mass of machinery such as is scarcely to be found in India.' The brief article accompanying the illustration notes that the original photograph from which the engraving was made was taken by Mr. Clarke.
