- Bound ledgers of trials held in the courtyard of the Nae We Shrine (Accra, Ghana), including inserted loose materials such as correspondences and notes. It should be noted that in some case the loose materials that have been inserted in the ledger do not relate specifically to case that they are attached to. Trials include charges of witchcraft, sorcery, theft, defamation, sexual misconduct, theft, insult, foolery, etc. All trials are transcribed in English, but were conducted mostly in Ga, and occasionally in Twi, English or Ewe. The trials are overseen by the priest and the elders of the shrine. Plaintiffs and defendants are summoned by the court Bailiff. Recordings in the ledger are made by the secretary and are sometimes signed by wittnesses, depending on the case. Extent and format of original material: 264 pages. - The trials in the ledger are recorded chronologically by the Secretary of the Nae We Shrine in Accra, Ghana. Trial names are based on the neighborhood of the city where the alleged violation took place. Blank ledgers are made from bound sheets of foolscap glued together at workshops in a neighborhood near the shrine and purchased by the Secretary. Loose material may include correspondence, notes, invoices, calculations, blueprints, and any other relevant documentary material. The order of entry and storage of loose material has not been altered.
