View from the river looking towards the landing place and palace beyond, with a state barge moored at the landing place. 'It is situated at Ram-Naggar, upwards of a mile to the south-east of Sivala Ghat, on the opposite side of the river, presenting a picturesque frontage and is the residence of the present Maharaja of Benares. Within the fort is a temple dedicated to Vedavyas, the most renowned compiler of the Vedas; hither in the month of Magh (January and February) not only the people of Ramnaggar perform their pilgrimage, but great multitudes from Benares, likewise resort. In the month of Phagun (February and March) a singing and dancing festival called 'Raj Mangal' is held here; boats laden with people attended by singing and dancing girls proceed from Asi Ghat and row about the river in front of the fort.
