Scope & Content:

Side view of the European-style carriage, with an attendant standing beside the rear wheel. Reproduced in Steven Wachlin, Woodbury and Page Photographers Java (KITLV Press, Leiden, 1994), p. 122, with the following note: 'The state carriage Kiao Grudo of the Susuhunan of Surakarta. Made of tropical wood, this eighteenth century carriage was probably constructed in Java. Tradition has it that Susuhunan Pakubuwana II used this carriage when the court of Mataram was moved from Kartasura to Surakarta in 1745.'
