Cauvery-Mettur Dam Project. One of the 1400 ton towers placing concrete and mortar for the construction of the dam. Photographer: Unknown
- Scope & Content:
-
Close view of gantry tower. The accompanying typescript note reads: One of the 1400 ton towers placing concrete and mortar for the construction of the dam. The chutes could be turned round and raised up so that the concrete could be made to drop of the end of the lowest chute at any point of the dam. The whole tower rolls on 48 wheels along railway track laid in rear of the dam. This is the biggest machine ever constructed for travelling on land. It works by electricity.
Reproduced as plate 16 in C. G. Barber, History of the Cauvery-Mettur Project (Madras, 1940). For a detailed description of the tower, see pp. 87-88, where this photograph of the completed tower is dated 3 April 1930.
[Gelatin silver print, 151x200mm].
