Genre: War Photography
View of the stone tower known as the Minar-i-Chakri, which marks the pass at the top of Takht-i-Shah, to the south of Kabul, not far from the village of Shewaki, with a group of soldiers posed at the base. Over 20 metres high, the tower was built in the early centuries A.D., in Kushan diaper style with a Maurya-style bell-shaped lantern. It has been seen variously as of mixed Greek and Persian style or as a Buddhist tower erected on the crest of the Takht-i-Shah to mark the head of the pass on the caravan route between Gardez and Kabul. The tower collapsed in 1988 from lack of maintenance. See Edgar Knobloch, 'The archaeology and architecture of Afghanistan' (Stroud, 2002), p. 85. Other copies of this photograph can be found at APAC Photo 98 (38), Photo 197 (20), Photo 449/1 (4), Photo 449/2 (35). The present print is the brighest image of these various duplicates.
