Boûlâk. Carrefour (mosquée, café, etc.). [Cross-roads, with mosque, café, etc, Bulaq, Cairo.] Photographer: Teynard, Félix
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Architectural Photography
[Bulaq, situated on the Nile, is the port of Cairo. The café is on the left, with its little colonnettes and carved wood grille. On the right, is a large doorway, always open to the generally prevalent north wind, which serves to circulate the air inside, on a principle analogous to that used to ventilate the interiors of ships. Also on the right, above the archway, are two ‘mashrabiyyas,’ or closed wooden screens, which allow women to take the air without being observed, at the same time enabling them to look through the skilfully arranged wooden grilles, carved in varied designs.]
